Why thumbnails decide your views
On YouTube, your thumbnail and title work together as the ad for your video. People scan a page full of options and decide in a moment which one to click. A great video with a weak thumbnail rarely gets the chance to prove itself.
For coaches, consultants, founders and creators, a consistent thumbnail style also builds recognition. When viewers start to recognize your look in their feed, they click faster.
The right YouTube thumbnail size
YouTube recommends 1280 x 720 pixels, a 16 to 9 ratio. Every design here uses that exact size and downloads at full resolution.
Watch the bottom right corner
YouTube places the video length over the bottom right of your thumbnail. Keep text and faces out of that corner. Turn on the guides to see it.
Design for small screens
Most people see your thumbnail at a small size on a phone. If it does not read at that size, simplify it.
Keep the file light
YouTube limits thumbnail file size, so JPG is usually the safer choice for photo heavy designs. Use PNG when your design is mostly text and flat colors.
What makes a thumbnail clickable
- Three to five words, big. The thumbnail should add to your title, not repeat it.
- A face with a clear expression. People are drawn to faces, and emotion signals what the video feels like.
- High contrast. Bright text on dark backgrounds, or dark on light, so it pops in a busy feed.
- One focal point. One face, one object or one number, not five.
- A consistent style across your channel, using the same fonts and colors.
Thumbnail formulas that work
The big promise
A bold result in a few words, like "I tripled my clients," with your face reacting.
The mistake
"Stop doing this" or "I was wrong," which taps into curiosity and fear of missing out.
The number
"5 AI tools" or "$0 to $1M," which sets a clear expectation.
Before and after
Two halves that show a change, great for tutorials and case studies.
Each starter template uses one of these formulas. Swap in your words and photo, and keep the structure.
Adding your photo
Open Upload to add your own photo. JPG, PNG and WebP images up to 5 MB work, and your image stays in your browser. Drag the corners to resize, use Bring to front or Send to back to layer it, and choose Fill background to make a photo cover the whole thumbnail. A cut out photo of you with a transparent background works best, and an in browser background remover is coming soon.
